It will be a new trim level on the refreshed version of Volkswagen's largest SUV

  • The refreshed 2024 Atlas will offer only a turbocharged four-cylinder, dropping the available V6.
  • The Peak Edition will be a trim level, not an option package.
  • It features unique styling cues and all-terrain tires.

Volkswagen has unveiled the 2024 Atlas Peak Edition at the New York International Auto Show. The new edition has unique styling cues that give it a “more rugged overland look,” the automaker said, and set it aside from other trims in the lineup.

Volkswagen Canada has confirmed that it will be available in Canada as well. It will be a separate trim line, rather than an option package, with pricing and details revealed closer to its launch this summer.

The 2024 Atlas and smaller Atlas Cross Sport were revealed last February at the Chicago Auto Show. Both undergo a refresh for the upcoming model year, including a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder in all, replacing the available V6 engine; 12-inch centre display screen and 10.25-inch instrument cluster screen; new interior materials with available quilted leather seats; and redesigned front end. The base Trendline trim will be discontinued, as it seems around 40 per cent of Canadian buyers opt for the top-trim Execline.

The new Peak was inspired by the Atlas Basecamp Concept that was unveiled in 2019, which included off-road tires, roof rack with off-road lights, and a specially designed trailer that included a bed, pull-out kitchen, toilet, and shower.

The production Peak Edition will include a unique front fascia with gloss-black “X” design across the lower portion, silver underbody cladding, and gloss black grille. The Peak Edition logo is included on a large gloss-black badge on the quarter panel. The blacked-out look includes black mirror caps, window surround, roof rails, wheel arches and tailgate strip. The 18-inch black wheels wear 255/60 all-terrain tires. Unique colours for the Peak Edition are Avocado Green and Pure Grey.

The Peak Edition’s cabin includes black faux-leather upholstery with grey accents and orange stitching, and a black metallic check pattern in the dash and door inserts. The logo appears in the steering wheel, and 30 colours will be available in the ambient lighting.
