Black ice, blowing snow and poor visibility have prompted Alberta RCMP to extend their warning about dangerous driving conditions along Highway 2 throughout central Alberta.

On Saturday, RCMP issued an advisory urging drivers to avoid the stretch of road between Red Deer and Airdrie. Sunday morning, an updated statement noted snowplows and other snow removal equipment are working to keep the road clear but travel is still not recommended unless absolutely necessary.

Constable Kelsey Davidge with the RCMP said until the roads are cleared and/or until the temperature rises, it’s likely the poor driving conditions along Highway 2 north of Calgary will persist.

“If you don’t need to drive, don’t,” she said. “Continue to monitor 511 and plan accordingly.”
