Mercedes introduces Night Series for Maybach; electric CLA, GLC planned

This news double-header shows you just how feverishly Stuttgart is working at expanding both ends of the price spectrum

Huge car companies like Mercedes-Benz must cover an enormous amount of ground when it comes to product. For example, the entry-level CLA sedan and GLC crossover cousins are rather very far removed from the bucks-deluxe offerings at its Maybach division. Still, the crew in Stuttgart are bound and determined to keep product fresh and relevant at each end of the scale.

First up are the Night Series vehicles from Maybach. Intended to give the sub-brand’s variants of the EQS SUV, GLS, and S-Class sedan even more gravitas and on-road presence, the package includes elements in dark chrome, rose gold detail accents, and snazzy wheel designs refined with a dark-glossy Maybach pattern. In other words, Maybach is here after a customer who prefers their vehicles dipped in an inkwell and finished with the dark of night.

Details will differ across all three machines, but some motifs will be shared. Dark chrome Maybach logos on a rose gold background will appear in the headlights of these luxury whips; just about all the brightwork will be burnished to a dark sheen; and those wheels will show up across the board.

Speaking to the latter, their design pattern of repeating Maybach logos reminds us of those ultra-expensive handbags which have their maker’s insignia plastered all over in the hundreds. This is surely on purpose, and it is worth noting similar design choices were made when creating the bumper jowls of the new non-Night Series Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV shown earlier this year.

On the opposite side of the showroom, it seems the mother ship is preparing to introduce all-electric versions of the little CLA sedan and GLC crossover. That news stems from leaks out of a dealer meeting held in Vancouver a couple of days ago (if there’s one constant in this universe on which people can rely, it’s for car dealers to have big mouths) which suggested these EVs could be direct competitors with the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, respectively. Opportunity abounds in that segment; if Mercedes gets the pricing correct, these two will be interesting foils to the Tesla models.

In Canada, the Maybach Night Series design package will be available for the 2024 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and EQS SUV following the Canadian market introduction of those vehicles later in 2023. The 2025 Mercedes-Maybach GLS won’t appear until the third quarter of 2024. The all-electric variants of CLA and GLC remain unconfirmed for now.
