Nissan’s mid-size near-luxury Maxima, a nameplate that dates back to 1982, sees the end of its lengthy run in 2023 with production ceasing in August. As such, the front-drive sedan is a carryover from 2022 and continues to be available in three trims — SL, SR and Platinum. The sedan is visually striking and brags a classy cabin.
Billed as a “4-door sportscar,” the Maxima gets motivation from a robust and somewhat thirsty 300-hp 3.5L V6 engine hooked to an Xtronic continuously variable transmission, the latter removing much of the “sport.” The sedan handles well, and the drive mode selector (Sport and Normal) adjusts throttle response, transmission tuning, and steering feel.
Despite its large footprint, the Maxima is not particularly roomy and has compromised visibility, dated infotainment and a stingy 405-litre trunk. Nissan’s unique Zero Gravity front seats with sport bolstering offer indulgent comfort with its three-layer foam design, and the cabin is impressively quiet at cruise. Standard Safety Shield 360 includes emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear automatic braking, lane departure warning, radar-based blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert and high beam assist.
The final 2023 versions of Nissan’s gas-powered Maxima start at $43.240 for the SL, moving up to $46,790 for the sportiest SR and topping out at $47,900 for the Platinum.
