The 2023 Kia Niro is among the most versatile options for car buyers out there. Available as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or full EV, it’s always worth checking out. This four-door is hard to classify: some might call it a hatchback, or a wagon, while others might just describe it as a crossover. This year it has a new design that’s hard to miss and more modern looking than the outgoing model.
The Niro EV is a bit larger than the Hyundai Kona EV and has a little less range. The Kia boasts plenty of cool features including a 10.25-inch infotainment screen with standard navigation and heated seats. It can even get wireless phone chargers, a head-up display and a Harmon Kardon sound system.
There’s just one powertrain for the Kia Niro EV. All models use a 64.8 kWh battery that feeds a 201-hp motor at the front wheels. At 188 lb-ft of torque, this year's model has a bit less twist than the last model, but it should be more than enough for most drivers. It’s worth pointing out that the Chevrolet Bolt EUV has much more torque at 266 lb-ft. The Niro’s powertrain allows for 407 km of range, which is competitive for the class.
The 2023 Niro EV now supports DC Fast Charging speeds over 100 kW, allowing this EV to recharge in as little as 43 minutes depending on the conditions.
Due to the practical hatchback body style, the Kia Niro EV offers quite a lot of space for passengers and cargo. Front seats receive 1,028 mm of headroom and 1,053 mm of legroom and even the rear seats are accommodating with 967 mm of headroom and 938 mm of legroom. There are 646 litres of cargo room behind the rear seats, and 1,805 litres when those seats are folded.
The 2023 Kia Niro EV starts at $44,995 for the entry-level Premium model, which includes navigation. It’s a good idea to upgrade to the Premium+ model for $47,995 ($3,000 more) as it includes a wireless phone charger and a heat pump to improve performance in cold conditions. The top trim Limited model is $52,995 and has all the trimmings including a HUD, Harmon Kardon sound system, and a sunroof.
