The cute and charming Kia Soul is also available as an EV, allowing shoppers another affordable option that compares favourably to the Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan Leaf. The stand-out style of the Soul, along with its practical body and feature-packed interior makes it more appealing than other low-cost EVs on the market. Plus, Kia offers a very strong, 8-year/150,000 km warranty on its electric cars, adding more reassurance to first-time buyers. The Soul EV has several regenerative braking modes that are adjustable via a steering-wheel paddle but doesn’t have a one-pedal driving mode. It comes with a 10.25-inch infotainment system with standard navigation, along with heated seats, a wireless phone charger, and highway driving assistance.
The Soul EV comes in two trims with different performance characteristics. The Soul EV Premium features a 39 kWh battery that is paired with a motor that has 134 hp and 291 lb-ft of torque. That motor powers the front wheels and allows for 248 km of range.
The Soul EV Limited has a larger, 64 kWh battery and stronger motor that puts out 201 hp and 291 lb-ft of torque. Combined, this allows for 383 km of range, which is less than the Chevy Bolt EV and EUV but more than the Nissan Leaf Plus.
The Soul EV supports DC Fast Charging up to 100 kW, which lets the battery recharge in about 47 minutes.
The Kia Soul EV is among the more practical compact EVs on the market, thanks to its boxy shape. The vehicle offers 663 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, which expands to 1,735 litres when you fold those rear seats. Both of those figures are better than what’s found in the Bolt and Leaf. The Korean hatchback is more accommodating in the front seats than the rear, meaning only kids or teens would be comfy in the back.
The 2023 Kia Soul EV Premium starts at $43,095 and includes plenty of standard equipment including navigation and driver assists. The 2023 Soul EV Limited is an extra $9,000 and includes the bigger battery and more powerful motor for a total of $52,095. This model also has a head-up display, a Harmon Kardon sound system, and vented seats.
