The 2023 Kia Soul undergoes several changes, starting with a styling refresh that includes a new grille, redesigned rear bumper and taillights, and on the inside, a new steering wheel and instrument cluster. More sound-absorbing materials have been added for a quieter cabin. The EX+ gets a new 17-inch wheel design. The GT-Line is further differentiated from lower trims with new grille mesh, body-colour front and rear bumpers, centre exhaust, extended exterior chrome garnish, new 18-inch alloy wheel design, and exclusive Surf Blue exterior paint option. Other new features, depending on the trim, include multi-reflector LED headlights, 10.25-inch infotainment screen with built-in navigation and Kia Connect Telematics, electronic parking brake, and Fusion Black exterior colour. Also new are safety assist systems including rear occupant alert, lane follow assist, blind-spot collision avoidance assist, highway driving assist, and forward collision avoidance assist including on turns. Discontinued features include LED projection headlamps and fog lamps, head-up display, rain-sensing wipers, and Onyx Black exterior colour. As before, Kia provides a 5-year/100,000-km comprehensive and powertrain warranty that covers almost everything on the vehicle.
Performance
The Soul comes in five trim levels of LX, EX, EX+, EX Premium, and GT-Line Limited. All use a 2.0L four-cylinder engine making 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, running on regular-grade gasoline. The engine mates to an automatic continuously-variable transmission (CVT), which Kia prefers to call an intelligent continuously-variable, so you’ll see it described as an IVT on the automaker’s website. All trims are front-wheel drive. The U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2022 Soul its Top Safety Pick award, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) only gives the 2023 model a four-star crash rating, instead of the highest five-star. Practicality
The 2022 Soul was lengthened slightly to provide a bit more cargo space. It includes a two-position cargo floor, with 530 litres of cargo volume in the top position and 663 litres in the lower, and the rear seats fold for carrying longer items. The vehicle’s boxy shape provides good headroom for passengers, and legroom is generous for its size. All trims include such features as heated seats, smartphone integration, tire pressure monitoring system, rear occupant alert, and mandatory rearview camera. The EX, one up from the base LX, adds such items as LED headlights and taillights, heated washer nozzles, heated steering wheel, wireless phone charger, emergency front and rear braking, blind-spot collision assist, and driver alert monitor. The Soul LX is $22,595, while the EX is $24,495. The EX+ at $25,295 adds to the EX with 17-inch alloy wheels (the EX has 16-inch) and a sunroof. The EX Premium, at $27,195, then adds 18-inch alloy wheels, 10.25-inch infotainment screen with Kia Connect, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote starter, pushbutton start, auto-dimming mirror, and ambient lighting. The GT-Line Limited, at $29,495, includes exclusive exterior styling cues plus leather upholstery, power driver and passenger air-cooled seats, heated rear seats, flat-bottom sport steering wheel, and premium stereo.
