2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Redesigned into all-new model for 2022, the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee undergoes only minor changes for this model year. The off-road-ready Trailhawk trim, previously available in the regular Grand Cherokee lineup, now comes only as the 4xe plug-in hybrid (PHEV). A Uconnect 5 infotainment system with navigation and 10.1-inch digital touchscreen is now standard on Limited and Overland models. New standalone options are a nine-speaker Alpine audio system on the Limited; and a 19-speaker McIntosh system on the Overland and Summit trims.

Now in its fifth generation, the Grand Cherokee ranges from well-equipped models to serious luxury, but without having to move up to the even-more luxurious but much pricier Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer. The Grand Cherokee is a five-seater. The three-row Grand Cherokee L is covered separately here.

Performance 

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes with a 3.6L V6, making 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque; or a 5.7L V8 that makes 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. Both are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe PHEV uses a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder that makes 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, along with two electric motors, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and 400-volt battery pack. When fully charged after plugging in, it has an electric-only range of up to 42 kilometres. When that runs out, it reverts to conventional hybrid operation, automatically switching between gasoline, electricity or a combination of the two, depending on driving conditions.

All Grand Cherokee trims have standard four-wheel drive. Depending on the trim, this will be Quadra-Trac I with full-time, single-speed 4WD; Quadra-Trac II with two-speed transfer case; or Quadra-Drive II which adds a rear electronic limited-slip differential. When four-wheel drive isn’t required, the Grand Cherokee automatically disconnects the front axle for improved fuel economy, and reconnects it immediately as required.

Practicality

While most owners will stay on the pavement, the Grand Cherokee is very capable off-road. Driving modes include snow, mud, sand and rock, and an available air suspension can provide up to 10.9 inches of ground clearance. The Trail Hawk, now available exclusively with the 4xe PHEV driveline, includes a low-speed cruise control function for off-road driving.

The Grand Cherokee with V6 can tow a maximum of 6,200 lbs, and up to 7,200 lbs when equipped with the V8. Payload ranges from 1,140 to 1,260 lbs. The Grand Cherokee 4xe can tow up to 6,000 lbs and has a maximum payload of 1,050 lbs.

Canadian Pricing

The Grand Cherokee starts as the Laredo at $54,045, which can be optioned with an Altitude package that adds such features as gloss black trim, remote starter, heated front seats and steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, and wireless charger. Other trims are the Limited at $62,045; Overland at $70,945; and Summit at $76,045. That top trim can further be optioned with a Summit Reserve package, which includes such features as premium leather, open-pore wood trim, massaging seats, premium 19-speaker McIntosh audio system and 21-inch wheels.

The PHEV version starts as the Grand Cherokee 4xe at $71,995. The Trailhawk 4xe, now exclusively with the plug-in powertrain, is $76,595. Other trims are the Overland 4xe at $80,995 and Summit 4xe at $86,495, which can also be equipped with the Summit Reserve package.
