For those seeking bona fide off-road prowess in a sub-compact crossover, the Jeep Renegade answers the call — at least with the top Trailhawk variant that gets skid plates, 21:1 crawl ratio, generous ground clearance and 48 cm of water fording capability. For 2023, the Limited model gets standard adaptive cruise control, along with a new available Elite package adding full suite of exterior LED lighting, wiper deicer and auto park assist. The Latitude and Trailhawk also see re-jigged option packages, and Detonator Yellow is added to the paint palette.
The Renegade is powered by a 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. The engine puts out 177 hp and 210 lb-ft of torque, which is adequate but hardly thrilling. A light right foot delivers reasonable fuel economy. The Latitude and Trailhawk have a composed and comfortable ride, although rival offerings can deliver more driving fun.
The Renegade is one of the roomiest vehicles in this class, but its thick roof pillars create blind spots. Behind the second row is 524L of cargo space, expandable to 1,438L. Cubbie space in the cabin is limited. Both Jeep Active Drive and Active Drive Low 4x4 systems include the Jeep Selec-Terrain system, providing up to five modes (Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud modes, plus exclusive Rock mode on the Trailhawk model). The Renegade will tow up to 2,000 lbs.
The Renegade is capable, fun, and quirky, and commands a premium for that “Jeep” thing. The North starts at $37,090, reaching to the Trailhawk Elite at $43,335.
