The 2021 Hyundai Nexo is one of the few hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered vehicles on the market. It’s also the sole crossover-sized option with this kind of powertrain. What is a fuel-cell vehicle? Simply put - it uses compressed hydrogen instead of gas, which is then converted to electricity, and powers the wheels. It’s way more high-tech than that sounds, but the result is just water, making it a clean vehicle with a potentially quick refuel time. However, hydrogen fuel cell stations are very rare in Canada.
The 2021 Hyundai Nexo is essentially the replacement for the old Hyundai Tucson FCEV. It’s all-new and features a unique design language that appears more premium and upscale than the current generation Tucson.
The sleek styling of the Hyundai Nexo hides a 95-kW fuel-cell stack as well as a 40 kWh battery, which juices up a 161 horsepower electric motor. That motor powers the front wheels, though it isn’t particularly fast or entertaining. Fully fuelled, the FCEV should deliver 570 km of driving range before needing a stop at the hydrogen pumps.
The Hyundai Nexo features seating for 5, and even adults will be able to sit comfortably in the rear seats. There’s an impressive amount of cargo room with 840 litres behind the rear seats, which expands to 1614 litres when the rear seats are folded. In general, it’s pretty comparable to the Hyundai Tucson, to help you get a better idea of the size and practicality of the crossover.
The 2021 Hyundai Nexo starts at $72,925 including the $1,925 destination and delivery fee this price is for the Preferred trim level, while Hyundai also offers the fully loaded Ultimate trim level for $75,425. This higher trim level model gets features like vented seats, a surround-view camera, a sunroof and more.
