The best handling compact crossover comes from Korea, and it’s called the Hyundai Kona N. Yes, the N’s interior is a bit dated, and the crossover has a very stiff ride, but those looking for the scrappiest and most track-hungry of tall front-drive hatches can end their search here. Introduced as a 2022 model, the Kona N is unchanged for 2023.
Powering the Kona N is a rorty 2.0L turbocharged direct-injected four-cylinder that produces 276 hp, 289 lb-ft of torque and a lot of rude noises on lift off when in sport mode. The Kona N gets a superb eight-speed dual-clutch auto. This crossover is quick, poised, and when pushed to the limit don’t roll over and play dead. A brilliantly tuned chassis, electronic limited-slip differential and Pirelli P Zeros sized 235/40R19 give the N its moves. The beefed-up N brakes show no sign of fade.
A hatchback’s calling card is practicality. There’s 544L of cargo space behind the second row, which expands to 1,296 with the split seat folded. However, the rear seats are cramped and best left for kids. The N comes well-equipped — 10.25-inch touchscreen, 10.25 digital instrument cluster, full complement of driver and safety aids, head-up display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities, navigation, and wireless charging pad.
The 2023 Kona N DCT lists at 40,299, with paint colour being the only decision buyers must face.
