The 2023 Honda Civic Type R takes all that was great about the previous-gen R, applies it to the 11th-gen Civic, et viola, an even more focused front-drive hot hatch. Which is saying something, as the outgoing Type R had set the benchmark. The less extroverted exterior should broaden its appeal, but that said, this hard-core car is for enthusiasts.
The Type R’s 2.0L turbo-four gets dialed up to 315 hp and 310 lb-ft and is hooked only to a slick-shifting six-speed manual. Innovative front axle geometry all but eliminates torque steer, and the R’s chassis and 19-inch Michelin 4S serve up astounding agility and grip.
Being a four-door hatch, the Civic Type R offers up all the practicality of the standard Civic hatch. It has a roomy interior with good rear seat space, but the aggressively bolstered front sport seats (red only), firm ride and noisy interior point to the Type R’s mission of being a lethal track weapon. Honda’s latest infotainment gets a nine-inch screen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
