The 2023 Ford Expedition gets some minor updates for the model year. The Timberline gets standard Trail 1-Pedal Drive, which automatically activates the brakes as required when driving off-road, so you only need to use the throttle. The King Ranch gets new standard equipment including 22-inch wheels, 15.5-inch centre touchscreen with swipe capability, premium Bang & Olufsen 22-speaker sound system, SYNC 4A infotainment system with improved voice recognition, and additional driver-assist technologies.
The Expedition loses its hands-free foot-activated tailgate. New exterior colours are Jewel Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat, along with Race Red for fleet sales; while Rapid Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat is discontinued. The Timberline gets an Ebony Black interior while its Deep Cypress interior is discontinued, and it gets front- and second-row floor liners.
The Expedition uses a turbocharged 3.5L “EcoBoost” V6 in three power variations, depending on trim. It makes 380 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque in the XLT, Limited, and King Ranch trims (along with the base SSV trim that’s available only to commercial fleets). It’s upgraded to 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque in the Platinum, while on the Timberline and the Stealth Performance Edition, it has its highest output of 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. All versions use a ten-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive is standard across all trims.
The 2023 Ford Expedition is the automaker’s largest SUV and comes standard with three rows of seats. It offers 546 litres of cargo space with the third row upright, but if that isn’t enough to carry a full load of passengers and their luggage, the Expedition also comes in the longer Expedition Max, covered separately here. Maximum towing capacity, when properly equipped, is up to 9,300 lbs.
While the Expedition is oversized for off-road trails, it can still get you into the great outdoors, and the Timberline is the trim for that. It includes higher ground clearance, underbody skid plates, and trail assist for tight turns. The Stealth Edition Performance Package is an option on the Limited trim and adds a sport-tuned suspension in addition to the high-output engine.
The Expedition starts in XLT trim at $73,285. Other trims are the Limited at $87,615; the Timberline at $88,745; the King Ranch at $96,655; and the Platinum starting at $100,010.
