A new midsize Ford Ranger is expected within the near future, and so the 2023 version is unchanged. In Ford’s truck lineup, it slots in between the compact Maverick and the full-size F-150, and comes in SuperCab (extended cab) and SuperCrew (crew cab) configurations.
All Ranger trims use a turbocharged 2.3L “EcoBoost” four-cylinder engine that makes 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission. The engine runs on regular-grade 87-octane gasoline and includes auto start/stop, which shuts off the engine at idle – such as when you’re stopped for a light – to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions, and automatically starts it up when you take your foot off the brake.
The Ranger is offered in rear-wheel drive in some markets, but in Canada it’s sold exclusively with four-wheel drive. An electronic locking rear differential can be optioned on all trim levels for $500.
The SuperCab seats four and has a six-foot bed, while the SuperCrew has five-occupant seating and a five-foot bed. There are several options available for the bed, including a spray-in or drop-in bedliner, 12-volt power plug, bed extender, and storage box.
Maximum payload for the SuperCab is 1,650 lbs, and 1,560 lbs for the SuperCrew. With either configuration, towing capacity tops out at a very respectable 7,500 lbs.
The 2023 Ford Ranger comes in three trim levels, which also determines its configuration. The base XL comes only in SuperCab and starts at $38,480. The mid-level XLT comes in SuperCab starting at $40,415, or in SuperCrew at $42,215. The top-level Lariat comes only as a crew cab and starts at $46,765.
Depending on the trim, available options include Tremor or FX4 off-road packages, a trailer tow package, adaptive cruise control, navigation, and auto-dimming rearview mirror.
