The 2023 Ford Explorer is mostly unchanged for the model year, other than some minor alterations. Auto stop-start, which automatically shuts off the engine at idle, is removed from all trims. The ST and ST-Line get standard black roof side rails with black end caps. The ST’s previously-optional Street Pack of 21-inch wheels, performance brakes and painted calipers is now standard. All-weather floor mats are now available.
The Explorer comes with four available engine choices. The base engine is a turbocharged 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, making 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid option uses a 3.3L V6 with electric motor that makes a combined 318 horsepower along with 322 lb-ft of torque. There are also two versions of a 3.0L EcoBoost V6, making 365 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque in the Platinum trim, and 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque in the ST. All engines mate to a ten-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard on all trims.
The Explorer has three rows of seats, including second-row captain’s chairs for six passengers, or an optional second-row bench seat for seven-passenger seating – unlike with many SUVs, the Explorer’s third row is for two people only. You get 515 litres of cargo space behind the third row, and it and the second row fold flat for extra cargo capability. Standard features include tri-zone automatic climate control, lane-keeping assist, and power-adjustable front seats. Depending on trim and options, the Explorer can tow up to 5,600 lbs.
The 2023 Ford Explorer starts at $48,340 in XLT trim. The next-step-up Limited starts at $54,830. It’s the only trim that offers the hybrid option, which is $59,830. The performance ST starts at $66,420, while the top-level Platinum trim is $67,320.
