An all-new Mustang is on its way for 2024, and so the 2023 model is unchanged save for the cutback of some colour choices. Cyber Orange Metallic Tri-Coat and Brittany Blue Metallic are no longer available.
The 2023 Mustang is the sixth generation of the fabled pony car, and comes as a coupe – which Ford calls the fastback – plus a convertible, Mach 1, and Shelby.
The Mustang ranges from mild to wild, starting with a 2.3L “EcoBoost” turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 310 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. It can be upgraded with a High Performance Package that provides the same torque but increases output to 330 horsepower.
The Mustang GT uses a 5.0L V8 that makes 460 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, while the Mach 1 tunes that engine to produce 470 horsepower and 410 lb-ft. All these engines can be mated to a six-speed manual transmission or a ten-speed automatic. The Shelby GT500 sits on a loftier perch, with a supercharged 5.2L V8 that spins out 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque, mated exclusively to a Tremec seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Who said anything about practicality? The Mustang has always been about having fun, and that hasn’t changed since its introduction back in mid-1964. All models are rear-wheel drive and have 2+2 seating. All come with several driver-assist technologies, including emergency front braking, lane-keeping assist, rain-sensing wipers, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. And if your idea of “practical” includes “what can I take to the track straight out of the box?” then the Shelby GT500 can get you from zero to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds.
The biggest issue for shoppers is going to be availability, with the factory switching over to 2024 production and selection winding down to what’s in dealer inventory. The 2023 Mustang coupe starts at $33,160, while the convertible begins at $37,480. The Mach 1, which comes only as a coupe, starts at $70,850.
