The midsize Chevrolet Malibu seems to be living on borrowed time, but it returns for the 2023 model year. It got a makeover in 2019 and hasn’t changed appreciably since then. In 2022, alongside trims equipped with a 1.5L turbocharged engine, you could also get the top Premier trim with 2.0L turbo, but it’s been dropped for 2023 and only the smaller engine is available across the lineup.
With the earlier departure of the Cruze sedan, and then the discontinuation of the subcompact Spark hatchback at the end of the 2022 model year, the Malibu is one of only three car models remaining at Chevrolet, alongside the Camaro and Corvette.
All Malibu trims use a turbocharged 1.5L four-cylinder engine that makes 163 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, mated to an automatic continuously-variable transmission (CVT). All trims are front-wheel drive.
The Malibu seats five, with good front- and rear-seat legroom and headroom, and with a trunk volume of 445 litres. All trims include such features as emergency front braking with pedestrian detection, ten airbags, acoustic windshield, automatic high-beam headlamps, eight-inch infotainment screen, pushbutton start, lane-keep assist, and Wi-Fi hotspot. Upper trims can include a dual-pane sunroof, LED headlamps, Bose premium audio, navigation, dual-zone climate control, and heated steering wheel.
With the discontinuation of the top-trim Premier, the Malibu now divides its previous single LT trim into the LT1 and top-level LT2. Pricing starts with the base LS at $26,953 and then to the RS at $27,853. The LT1 starts at $29,453, while the LT2 begins at $36,953.
