The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 gets some upgrades to its available turbodiesel engine, adding 10 per cent more horsepower and increasing the torque from 460 to 495 lb-ft. That’s the only major difference from 2022, when the Silverado got a refresh of its styling and features lineup. The 2023 model also adds three new exterior colours of Radiant Red Tintcoat, Sterling Grey Metallic, and Harvest Bronze Metallic; and the High Country trim can now be ordered with a new Jet Black/Umber interior colour combination.
Four engine choices are offered, with their availability depending on trim. They are a 2.7L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque; the 3.0L inline-six turbodiesel with 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque; a 5.3L V8 with 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque; and a 6.2L V8 making 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
Both V8 engines include fuel-saving Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM), which shuts off some cylinders when full power isn’t needed. The 2.7L uses an eight-speed automatic transmission, while all other engines are mated to a ten-speed automatic. Two- or four-wheel drive is available, although the highest trims are 4x4 only, including the off-road-ready ZR2.
The Silverado comes in regular cab with standard (6-foot-6) or long (8-foot) bed; double cab with standard bed; and crew cab in short (5-foot-8) or standard bed.
The regular cab comes only in WT (Work Truck) trim, while the double cab further adds Custom, LT and RST trim. The popular crew cab adds the highest trims of Trail Boss, LTZ and High Country, along with the ZR2 that includes 33-inch tires, Multimatic performance dampers, front and rear electronic locking differentials, and off-road suspension.
Depending on the trim, the regular cab can tow up to a maximum of 9,900 lbs, but it only offers the 2.7L or 5.3L engines. The double cab and crew cab can tow up to 13,300 lbs when equipped with the diesel engine and a maximum towing package.
In regular cab, the Silverado starts at $45,003, while the double cab begins at $48,603. The crew cab starts at $51,103, while the ZR2, which comes only with the 6.2L V8, starts at $87,503.
