With a longer wheelbase than its S5 Coupe stablemate, the rapid S5 Sportback adds a ton of functionality to the proceedings along with a fetching fastback body. It’s the complete “family” package — looks, power, handling and hauling. New for 2023 are wireless charging, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, plus the Competition Package that, despite its name, is all visual — lots of black trim.
The S5 Sportback swaps its less powerful sibling’s 261-horsepower 2.0L turbo for Audi’s 2.9L turbocharged V6. Here it kicks out 349 horses and 369 lb-ft. Transmission duties are handled by the excellent eight-speed ZF unit — no manual is offered. This is a fast coupe, and with the optional Dynamic Package (torque-vectoring rear differential and adaptive dampers), it will make quick work of a winding road. Ride quality remains family friendly.
With its cleverly integrated hatchback, this rakish four-door is imminently practical. The standard powered hatch opens to reveal 468L of cargo space, expandable to 1,280L with the split rear seat folded. Back seat room is fine for adults, although the sloping roofline does cut into headroom.
The 2023 Audi S5 Sportback is available in two trims, the $66,800 Progressiv and $70,700 Technik. At only $500 more than the cramped two-door S5 Coupe, why wouldn’t you? Technik trim bestows LED/laser headlights, Bang and Olufsen sound, wireless charging and a comprehensive suite of safety and driver aids.
