Audi's chunky A5 coupe and cabriolet move up the performance ladder in S5 guise. Looks, power, handling and desirability take a leap forward, as does pricing. It’s a mature package, both inside and out, but perhaps not as dynamically engaging as some rivals. New for 2023 are wireless charging and wireless capability for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The new Competition Package ups the visuals with black trim, badging and rear spoiler.
The S5 swaps its less powerful sibling’s 261-horsepower 2.0L turbo for Audi’s 2.9L turbocharged V6, here making a healthy 349 horses and 369 lb-ft of torque. It’s hooked to an eight-speed ZF auto — no manual is offered. This is a fast coupe, and with its standard 19-inch wheels and the optional $2,950 Dynamic package (torque-vectoring rear differential and adaptive dampers), it will make quick work of a winding road. Ride quality remains acceptable.
Two-door sport coupes and convertibles are inherently not practical conveyances, and both these S5s are billed as four-seaters. Nonetheless, the S5 Coupe has a useful, if not huge, 450L trunk with a folding 40/20/40 rear seat, while the convertible makes do with 263L. Front cabins are beautifully rendered, if short on useful storage.
The 2023 Audi S5 Coupe comes in two trims, the $66,300 Progressiv and $70,200 Technik. Add a whopping $11,600 for a convertible top. Technik trim bestows LED/laser headlights, Bang and Olufsen sound and a full suite of safety and driver aids.
