The 2023 Hyundai Kona is among the most popular subcompact crossovers on the market. It’s easy to see why, as the cute-ute is affordable, stylish, well-equipped and surprisingly fun to drive. Since the Kona was all new for 2022, it hasn’t been significantly updated for 2023. There are some adjustments to the trim levels, with features like the larger 10.25-inch infotainment system available on more trims.
There are a few different powertrains available on the Hyundai Kona. The basic engine found on most models is the 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that puts out 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque. The N-Line models get upgraded to 1.6-litre turbo fours with 195 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Models can be equipped with front, or all-wheel-drive, with naturally aspirated models using a continuously variable transmission while turbo models use a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The front-wheel-drive 2.0 litre model consumes 7.4 L/100 km in combined driving conditions, while the all-wheel-drive model manages 7.9. The turbo model is all-wheel-drive only and returns 8.2.
There’s also a front-wheel-drive, high-performance Kona N model with 276 hp and an all-electric Kona with 415 km of range.
The Kona is a bit smaller than some of its competition, like the Honda HR-V and Subaru Crosstrek, and doesn’t have as much cargo room as those Japanese rivals. You’ll find 544 litres of cargo room behind the rear seats while folding those seats will expand the cargo area to 1,296 litres. The Kona is also available with several driver assistance and safety systems including adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and forward collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
The 2023 Hyundai Kona starts at $24,274 for the basic, front-wheel-drive Essential trim while adding all-wheel-drive is an extra $2,000. The next step up is the FWD Preferred model, which starts at $26,624. The N-Line model is AWD only and starts at $31,624. There’s also an Ultimate package that is an extra $4,300. The high-performance Kona N starts at $42,224.
