Hyundai is recalling more than 9,000 ten-year-old Veloster models in Canada because a parking sensor in the rear bumper could short-circuit when wet, posing a fire hazard. The automaker is specifically recalling 9,021 Veloster cars from model years 2012 and 2013, along with 26,169 in the U.S., equipped with the Reverse Aid Parking Sensor (RPAS) feature.

On some of these affected vehicles, the sensor for that parking assist in the car’s rear bumper may have insufficient waterproofing around it, and when its circuit board gets wet, it’s liable to short-circuit, possibly causing a fire. In the U.S., Hyundai has received five reports of such fires tied to the issue so far, though none caused any crashes or injuries.

The problem has several telltale symptoms that Hyundai says owners can look out for: these include issues with the instrument cluster not working; the transmission shifter being stuck in Park; or melted plastic on the rear bumper. The automaker says if see any of these signs, you should park the vehicle outside and contact a Hyundai dealer.

Dealers will replace the sensors, and the fuses for them, in affected vehicles when they’re brought in for repair. Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted beginning April 2023. In Canada, the recall campaign number is 2023-102 in the Transport Canada database; and the manufacturer recall number is R0232.

Classics – like my first and currently only car, my 1971 Plymouth Valiant Scamp – are my favourite, but I love learning and writing about vehicular history, automotive design, and car culture.
