Honda recalls 50,000 vehicles in Canada for seatbelt defect

A manufacturing issue with the buckles of several three-to-five-year-old models may cause them to not latch properly

Honda is recalling roughly half-a-million three-to-five-year-old vehicles, including about 50,000 in Canada, because a defect may prevent the seatbelt from latching. The safety campaign specifically covers some of the Japanese automaker’s top-selling models, including the 2017 through 2020 CR-V SUV; the 2018 and 2019 Accord; the 2018 through 2020 Odyssey minivan; and the 2019 Insight. Model-year 2019 and 2020 Acura RDX SUVs are also covered. The total number of vehicles affected is 448,613 cars in the U.S.; and roughly 52,000 in Canada.

On some of these vehicles a manufacturing defect may allow the surface coating on the channel for the buckle to deteriorate; that means at colder temperatures, the belt release button could shrink and not latch properly. In an accident, an unlatched belt won’t restrain a passenger properly.

While it’s received more than 300 warranty claims over the problem, no injuries tied to the issue have yet been reported.

Owners of affect vehicles will be asked to bring their car to a dealer, who will replace the driver and front passenger seat-belt release buttons or buckle assemblies. If this repair has already been made, the owner will be eligible for reimbursement.
