Drop-top Land Rover Defender bows via Dutch company

Land Rover won't build one, but Heritage Customs will—the Valiance Convertible, the first roof-free Landie since the Evoque

Land Rover will tell you the Defender will go anywhere, but there is one place the British brand won’t take the off-roader. Luckily, a Dutch company is happy to go where Land Rover daren’t. The Heritage Customs Valiance Convertible is a built-to-order Defender with lots of customization options inside and out, and, most importantly, a power soft-top convertible roof.

In case you haven’t been tracking LR’s rooflines so carefully, the last roof-less Land Rover was the Evoque, which sunsetted in 2018. To get into this new one, buyers must supply their own Defender 90 and fork over at least €82,500 (CDN$121,143). But then, around three months later, they’ll have the most unique Land Rover on the block.

Heritage Customs removes the roof and rear pillars, swaps in the hand-made soft-top, available in a number of colours (including an OEM-similar white), and throws in a roll cage for safety. It’s a power-operated top, but latches do need to be released manually. The Valiance rolls on special 20-inch alloy wheels and tires from Heritage.

And being coachbuilders, the company’ll also do any number of customizations a customer might want (with price climbing accordingly). Seriously, the press release says the words “infinite ways” in reference to the interior. Things like paint colours, exterior trims, 3D-etched inlays, upholstery options, seat types, and something called “Magic Metal.”

The Valiance will be built-to-order, meaning there won’t be one in the shop if you happen to be in the Netherlands and try to stop by. So call ahead if you want one.
