Google to add new EV features to built-in Google Maps

The new 'very fast' charging filter helps you find 150-kW (or higher) chargers

As the EV world expands and updates, many companies are acting quickly to provide additional services to electric vehicle owners. One such company is Google, that is updating its services, specifically for customers with electric vehicles that have built-in Google Maps. A few auto brands that currently feature built-in Google Maps are Polestar, Volvo and General Motors. Unfortunately, if you’re using Google Maps via your mobile device (Apple CarPlay or Android Auto), you won’t be able to access the specific updates.

The new features include:

  • ‘Very fast’ charging filter: To get the fastest charge, EV owners can use the “very fast” filter to find 150-kW (or higher) chargers.
  • Updated search results: If you search for a grocery store, for example, the results will also show if the location has a charging station on-site.
  • Adding a charging stop: On any trip, even short ones, Google Maps will suggest the best charging stop based on your trip, traffic, and charge. If you don’t like the chosen station, it’ll look for another.

It seems that the new updates will need to take specific information from the EV, such as charge level and energy consumption, and it’s currently unknown how Google Maps will interact with the EV to understand its current charge, or lack thereof. Factors such as road conditions, weather and traffic, as well as your vehicle’s capacity to handle those things will all be a factor into which charging stations are chosen by the app.

The additions are the latest in a series of updates by Google to improve its EV features as electrification rises in popularity.
