GM being sued in Canada regarding their 8-speed automatic transmission

It's not the first lawsuit regarding this problematic GM transmission

Article content

In May of 2022, General Motors had a U.S. class-action lawsuit filed against them regarding issues with the popular 8LXX eight-speed automatic transmission. A year later, there’s a Canadian filing.

Through a recent GM Authority article, a Car Complaints report proclaims their GM 8L90 and 8L45E eight-speed automatic transmissions are defective and the harsh shifting components of the transmissions could create safety issues for the vehicles, occupants, and those nearby.

From the lawsuit: “All the persons in Canada (including but not limited to individuals, corporations, and estates) who, prior to the date of certification of this action as a class action, bought or leased vehicles (new or used) designed, manufactured, marketed, distributed, sold, warranted, or serviced by GM and equipped with GM’s (collectively, ‘Transmissions’.)”

Specifics are thin at the moment but the list of impacted vehicles is not:

As this isn’t the first and likely not the last lawsuit against these transmissions, they’ve replaced some of the eight-speed transmission with their more recent 10-speed, which was developed with Ford. Currently, the allegedly faulty transmission is still in some models, including the Camaro, Colorado and Silverado.

Speaking of Ford, they’ve also got lawsuits surrounding their new 10-speed gearbox with allegations of shoddy shifting resulting in surges and stutters between gears. Referenced as the 10R80 transmission, a lawsuit was brought against Ford on April 18, 2023 in Massachusetts. In a terrible move if true, a Jalopnik article states customers did reach out about the problems to Ford, Ford declined the repair and topped it off with “abrupt and harsh shifting is normal.”

Yikes.
