Camp Jeep offers off-road driving indoors at the Toronto auto show

Showgoers can experience a 4 meter tall climb, 25° side angle, rock garden and more

Off-road vehicles are best experienced on the trails where you can shift them into 4LO and leave the pavement behind you. But if you can’t swing that, you’ll get a chance to go off-roading right inside the Toronto Convention Centre during the Canadian International Auto Show (CIAS) taking place February 17-24.

The event is called Camp Jeep and it occupies 1,900 square metres of auto show floor. Obstacles include a four-metre high metal “mountain” with 35° inclines on both sides. There’s also a 1.5 metre stair climb that tests ground clearance, a 30° articulation wedge, and a breakover obstacle. But my favourite was the 25° side angle which makes you feel like you are about to roll over (but you aren’t).

Camp Jeep is a guided drive where showgoers can ride passenger in a variety of Jeep vehicles across the track. The ramps, blocks, and even the mulch used in the event are transported from show to show in 10 tractor trailers carrying a combined 72,000 kg of gear! That includes 100 yards of mulch and 10 tons of boulders. It takes the team 400 hours to assemble and disassemble.

The specialized drivers that pilot Jeeps around the course follow the show around the continent to different events. At this event alone, drivers will do some 2,000 laps around the track this weekend. Although Camp Jeep has visited 15 countries, this is the first time for Canadians to experience it on home turf. Camp Jeep is free to experience and this week thousands of visitors will get to go off-roading in the great indoors.
