Bugatti reveals bejewelled carbon-fibre eggs ahead of Easter

With prices starting at US$20,000, you probably don't want to be hiding these "objets" around the yard this weekend

The timing is more than likely a coincidence, but, yes, just ahead of the Easter weekend, luxury automobile marque Bugatti revealed it had partnered with British jeweller Asprey on a limited run of carbon-fiber, uh—eggs. While some of our readers are assuredly painting up the chicken-laid variety as I type this, you won’t want to mar the finish on these objets, seeing as Bugatti specifically crafted the shells using a “long and complex process” so that they’d be “completely free from disproportion or imperfection.”

Each carbon-fibre Royale Edition egg in the Asprey Bugatti Egg Collection is dotted with little silver elephants – a throwback to the dancing-elephant hood ornament worn on classic Bugattis like the Type 41 Royale – and lives within a diamond-encrusted silver lattice. Each comes, too, with a beautifully sculpted curved base designed not to impinge upon the opening of the diamond door built into each egg. Why would an egg have a door in it? Why, so its owner could see the tiny sterling silver Type 41 replica inside of course, situated in front of a depiction of the Chateau Saint Jean, the famous estate in Molsheim long ago purchased by Ettore Bugatti. Bet the Fabergé on your shelf is just hollow.

You’ll notice there are no photos of this impressive-sounding egg interior attached to this article. That’s not an accident—Bugatti has not released any. If you want a look inside one of these things, you’re going to have to buy one, or find someone who has. Bugatti and Aspery will make just 111 of these eggs, all black save for the final dozen, which will come in a variety of colours, customized to its buyer’s tastes.

“Ettore Bugatti believed in aesthetic engineering, creating art out of each component of his vehicles,” Bugatti International Managing Director Wiebke Ståhl said. “He saw the world through the eyes of an artist, taking inspiration from the work of his creative family. We maintain these values to this day at Bugatti, working closely with our partners like Asprey to create objet d’art in the vision of our founder.”

The Bugatti eggs start at US$20,000, but we will note that also includes a digital NFT egg that apparently changes shape over the course of each week. Move up to the not-black customizable final 12 eggs, and you’re looking at about US$200,000. At that price, you might not want to hide these eggs around the yard for the kids to dig up this Easter.
