BMW adds new AWD model to its all-electric i4 series

The 2024 i4 xDrive40 will have an estimated range of 494 km on a charge

BMW is adding a new all-wheel-drive (AWD) model to its all-electric i4 range with the 2024 i4 xDrive40, alongside the i4 eDrive 35, eDrive40 and M50. It will go on sale in Canada in the fourth quarter of 2023, starting at $69,900.

That all-wheel is achieved by adding a second electric motor to the front wheels. The new model produces 396 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque, and scoots from zero to 100 km/h in an estimated 5.1 seconds with a top speed of 200 km/h.

It uses the same 81.5-kWh battery as the eDrive40 and M50, and will have an estimated range of up to 494 km on a charge, which slots it between those two. While full specs are yet to come, the Munich-based automaker said it will come with “all the latest” powertrain technology of the other i4 models, and will use the same curved display with the BMW iDrive8 operating system.

This new i4 is the brand’s latest new all-electric model, following the recent unveiling of the 2024 i7 M70 xDrive, its quickest and most powerful plug-in to date. BMW says the plan is for 50 per cent of all models globally to be electric-only; and to that end, in 2022, the i4 M50’s worldwide sales made it the best-selling of all the available M vehicles, most of which are still gasoline-powered.

BMW Concept Touring Coupe

One more model recently made its debut as well. At the recent Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2023 car show in Italy, the wraps came off the BMW Concept Touring Coupe. Designed as a “shooting brake,” with long front overhang and tucked-in rear, the concept pays tribute to the 328 Touring Coupe that won the Mille Miglia endurance race in 1940, and the BMW 02 series models in the 1970s.

Rather than a plug-in, the concept carries a six-cylinder inline engine. It features a leather interior and custom-made luggage, paint containing blue glass flakes, and 20- and 21-inch wheels. While it was shown as a one-off model, design chief Adrian van Hooydonk told a few folks at the show that if there’s enough interest from well-heeled buyers, BMW might cobble together a production run of fifty or so for them. We’re betting that he won’t have much trouble finding half-a-hundred folks willing to pony up for one.
