GMC adds AT4X, AEV Editions to its 2024 Sierra 2500 HD

First, Chevrolet put some heavier-duty off-road capability into its heavy-duty trucks, and now sibling company GMC is doing the same. The automaker has announced the redesigned 2024 GMC Sierra 2500 will be offered with two new trims, the AT4X and AT4X AEV Edition. Yes, the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 offers essentially the same off-road upgrades, but those trims are known as the ZR2 and ZR2 Bison. The AT4X is also already offered on the Sierra 1500, an upgrade over the AT4 trim.

The new 2500 HD AT4X includes DSSV (Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve) dampers from Ontario-based Multimatic; electronic locking rear differential; 38-mm (1.5-inch) lift kit; unique steering knuckles, and upper and lower control arms; larger skid plates; and 35-inch Goodyear Territory tires. There’s also a new, selectable off-road driving mode that adjusts the throttle, transmission, and stability programs when driving off the beaten path.

The new trim also includes a premium interior with full-grain leather upholstery and massaging seats, wood trim, 12-speaker premium audio system, and 13.4-inch centre tablet-style touchscreen.

The AT4X AEV Edition adds features from off-road accessories company American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). These include stamped steel bumpers with front winch capability, heavy-duty steel skid plates, 18-inch Salta wheels, and unique badges and styling cues. The AT4X has a maximum towing capacity of 18,500 lbs, while the AEV Edition’s extra weight reduces its towing capacity slightly to 18,400 lbs.

As with other Sierra 2500 trucks, the AT4X and AEV Edition will come standard with a 6.6L V8 gasoline engine, making 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque. Optional is a Duramax 6.6L V8 turbodiesel that churns out 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque. Both are mated to an Allison ten-speed automatic transmission, and of course both trims are four-wheel-drive.

The new trims will also share the Sierra 2500’s available towing technologies, including up to 14 camera views, among them the hitch and transparent views of a gooseneck or fifth-wheel trailer; blind-spot monitoring that covers the trailer; and adaptive cruise control with trailering.

The new trims will go on sale in the fall of 2023. Pricing has yet to be announced, but in Canada, the 2023 Sierra 2500 AT4 – a step below the AT4X – starts at $82,253.
