How to earn a grand watching all 10 'Fast and Furious' movies

One finance website is taking applications for someone to binge the franchise — and take notes on the automotive wreckage

Fancy yourself a movie buff? FinanceBuzz, a personal finance website, announced early May it’s taking applications for someone willing to sacrifice a good chunk of time to watch all the Fast & Furious movies in exchange for a sweet US$1,000. That includes checking out the tenth instalment of the franchise, Fast X, set for a May 19 release.

On the face of it, this is simply a publicity stunt by FinanceBuzz. The company calls its offer a unique opportunity to “get a healthy education about the value of family,” a reference to the central theme that runs throughout the franchise.

But there’s more to the story, specifically a rather detailed list of requirements regarding how you must complete the task in order to get the grand. It’s not just about being a couch potato while you give up in excess of 20 hours to binge-watch the action-packed movies. FinanceBuzz also wants you to track damages from every car crash in each film. Yes, the successful applicant the company ends up hiring must take note of every collision, the extent of the resulting damage, and the type of cars involved.

To top things off, the website also wants to know if the count of car crashes has trended downward or upward through the franchise’s history. (We can hazard a guess to that one ourselves.) All of a sudden, it’s beginning to look like a not-insignificant amount of work for a thousand dollars. That said, it still works out to just under US$50/hour if you estimate it won’t take much more than the 20-plus hours of the films’ runtimes.

That’s still way above minimum wage, and the job remains an attractive proposition, especially if the winning candidate is already a fan of the franchise and not just someone looking for a quick payday. Oh, and did we mention the lucky person also gets an extra $100 for snacks and movie tickets?

The first Fast & Furious movie was released in 2001. It quickly became a massive hit, and set the foundation for what is one of the most successful movie franchises ever. F9: The Fast Saga, the franchise’s ninth instalment, saw a global box office gross of over US$720 million. There’s already a lot of buzz around the impending launch of Fast X, the tenth movie in the series, and work has begun on the eleventh and supposedly final chapter.

FinanceBuzz plans to use the project’s results to estimate the insurance impact of the franchise’s reckless driving, according to the job description. Applicants must be based in the United States (sorry, eh?) and have to apply by May 19. The chosen candidate will be selected on May 26 and contacted via email. We don’t know who that will be, but we will say this: Happy binge-ing!
